Typography for many is just type on a page and a means to an end. A way of putting a message across in written form. Flyers with information piled in, business cards with not only a company logo design but every service they offer crammed onto the back. The intent being to maximise the return on investment of the printed matter.
For Stephen it's about what’s left out in a typographical design that matters like the silence in a syncopated rhythm giving form to the beats that follow. Using a limited selection of fonts to express the content of a brochure or making a company logo work in black and white before disguising its faults with colour. These are methods that reduce a type design to its purest form allowing the character of the client's identity to surface.
Everything counts towards legibility, to the communication of your message or branding. The smallest shift in the space between the letter pairs (kerning) and distance between lines of text (leading), can often affect the weight or colour of a design. Less space can convey solidity, strength; more can reflect a light, friendly outlook.
This deliberate and considered way of approaching typography is a lifelong passion for Stephen. It is demonstrated in his typography and logo design portfolio examples presented above. Please take some time to let him know what you think of his work. ![]()
